Recently, a woman legally married to a prominent civil rights leader in the Muslim-American community has accused the man of domestic abuse. She began a GoFundMe as she is unemployed and needs financial assistance to get on her own two feet. The leader in discussion, Mr. Hassan Shibly, the Chief Executive Director of CAIR-Florida, has spoken out in a manner that defends himself while making himself look like the victim on his FaceBook wall. From vitriol as a reaction against his wife, to shaming her, to Shibly deleting all comments against him and allowing as well as liking incomprehensible comments, his wife has become shamed on social media for speaking out and seeking financial help.

Taboos in the Muslim American society surrounding discourse on domestic abuse mean the woman rarely speaks up. Mr. Shibly’s domestic situation sheds light on the impact those in powerful positions can have towards their political, financial and social bases. The Quran asks to fight for social justice (Surah Nisa 4:135) which brings us to the point of the petition: signing this means you believe Mr. Shibly should step down as the Chief Executive Director of CAIR-Florida given the division this is causing our Muslim-American society and the fragility of the current political climate.
