Please stand with us in calling for action to be taken against systemic racism in Scottish schools, including but not confined to my former high school - St. Augustine's RC High School (Edinburgh).

Over the six years I have spent at St Augustine’s, I have faced racism and discrimination personally. I have also witnessed many other pupils of BAME background face similar experiences. Having graduated from St Augustine's in 2019, I continue to hear stories from current pupils about the ways in which they have been mistreated by the School, particularly by those holding senior positions.

While racism in Scottish schools is not often seen, it is definitely felt.

I seek to bring these issues to the attention of John Swinney, the current Deputy First Minister and Secretary for Education and Skills. In doing so, I need your support. Pupils have no one to whom they can turn in seeking justice . How can pupils be expected to report incidents, in particular race-related incidents, when the very ‘leaders’ of our schools themselves are racist? How can they ever have faith that their voices will be championed, listened to, understood, when those in authority are dismissive, intolerant, and prejudiced to a fault?

We have been silent for too long. Speaking out on these important issues and holding  those responsible to account, is long overdue.
