Women and Child Development Minister Maneka Gandhi directed to National Commission for Women to create a ‘window’ in its online complaint system where men could bring up instances of false complaints against them. The directive is against the very principle of setting up of commission for women and keeping it entirely independent. It was first set up as a statutory body under the National Commission for Women Act, 1990 and does not fall under the control of the ministry. Interference of Ministry in the functioning of the commission is a breach of autonomous nature of it. The system will become an instrument of counter complaints by men. The directive negates the facts that women are victims of harassment of dowry and domestic violence which undoubtedly are perpetrated by men. Criminal justice system gives men opportunity to prove their innocence.
