I want to make airlines show when a flight is fully booked rather than continuing to sell tickets, hoping some people don’t show, or will give up their seat on the day.

I needed to fly from Alicante to London Southend urgently. I paid for my ticket, with EasyJet but could not check in online as I usually do, although the information was showing that you could book in up to 2 hours before the flight. I was not told why I couldn’t check in.The message just said to go to the check in at the airport on the flight date. (This was 5 days before). After calling customer services, I was informed that as some people don’t turn up For some flights they work out the probability of this happening then sell more tickets for these flights accordingly! As a consequence the flight was now overbooked, but not to worry as I would probably get on. And if not they would find me another flight but it might not be on that day or to that airport! I asked why this information wasn’t on their website and I was told if was. I had to search to find it. It was tucked away in a section of Help.

I have heard from friends who have not made it to funerals or to other important events because they were ‘bumped off’ a flight they had paid for. If they had known the flight was full they would have looked elsewhere, even if it meant paying more. The security of knowing you have a seat booked can be more important than price, if you need to get somewhere urgently.

if companies like EasyJet really care about their passengers and are doing this to keep the prices down, as they say, then they could sell the extra tickets as standby tickets. They would still be overselling, but, at least passengers could make an informed decision whether to buy or not.

Airlines need to stop overbooking in this clandestine way.

Passengers before profits please!
