Stop TikTok from Silencing the Voices of Disabled People
Why this petition matters
TikTok, a popular social media platform where people can share fun videos, has recently announced that they will be limiting the views on videos made by people who are “susceptible to bullying”. One of those groups of people are the disabled, most notably, the autistic users of TikTok. Many of us (Autistic people) use TikTok to provide education about autism and what it is like to be autistic. If less people see our videos, less people will be educated. In today’s day and age, there are still many stereotypes about autism, and the voices of autistic people are oftentimes silenced by parents of autistic children and organizations such as Autism Speaks that claim to speak on behalf of us, but don’t have any #ActuallyAutistic people on their staff. We cannot afford to have yet another organization speaking over us and claiming that they know what’s best for us. We know what’s best for ourselves. If someone bullies us, we can simply turn off commenting. We don’t need the views limited on our TikToks, if anything, we need the views increased, because allistics have a LOT to learn about autism.
