HELP OUR COMMUNITY BUY THE BERNIE GRANT ARTS CENTRE AND BUILD A HOME FOR REPARATORY JUSTICE
What we are asking for
We call upon the owners, leaseholders, trustees, directors, members, public authorities, funders and all properly authorised decision-makers connected with the Bernie Grant Arts Centre to:
Recognise and engage transparently with a properly evidenced community proposal for the lawful acquisition, protection or durable community stewardship of the Bernie Grant Arts Centre.
Give supporters of reparatory justice a fair and meaningful opportunity to develop and present a credible community proposal before any irreversible sale, transfer, disposal or redevelopment takes place.
Identify the people and organisations with lawful authority to decide the future of the Centre and explain how a community proposal will be considered.
Protect the Centre’s cultural purpose and its connection with the public legacy of Bernie Grant.
Engage in writing with the proposal to establish a democratic, accountable reparatory-justice institution inspired by the history, principles and unfinished work of the African Reparations Movement UK.
Ensure that decisions concerning the Centre’s future are properly authorised, transparent and open to meaningful community participation.
Why the Bernie Grant Arts Centre matters
The Bernie Grant Arts Centre is more than a building.
It carries the name and public legacy of Bernie Grant, whose work connected Black political representation, culture, community power and the demand for African reparations.
Our immediate objective is to demonstrate that supporters of reparatory justice want the Centre protected through lawful community acquisition or durable community stewardship.
Our wider objective is to help establish a democratic and accountable institution capable of developing and delivering reparatory justice for Black and Mixed-Black people.
We want the Bernie Grant Arts Centre to become a community home where Black history, culture, creativity, organisation and reparatory justice can grow together.
Why children and young people should be able to participate
Children should not be excluded from helping to shape the future.
A Black or Mixed-Black child may support this campaign because the proposed reparatory-justice system could be intended to deliver meaningful repair to people, families and communities affected by the continuing consequences of enslavement, colonialism and anti-Black injustice.
Another child or adult may not expect to receive reparations but may still support the campaign because they believe that reparatory justice should be delivered.
Both forms of support are important.
