                                             We Want Reusables

We are New York residents and we are sick of drawers full of plastic forks and straws, and our trash full of to-go containers---We Want Reusables from our restaurants, entertainment venues, office spaces, parks, and supermarkets.

Right now, we are facing a plastic crisis. A trash trucks worth of plastic gets dumped into the ocean every minute. [1] By 2050, there will be more plastic in the ocean than there are fish! [2] Recycling is not the answer either, China stopped taking most of our recycling 2018. There’s virtually no market for recycled plastic anymore, we’re swimming in a sea of plastic. In 2017, city of Stamford CT got paid $95,000 for their municipal plastic. In 2018 after China stopped taking our plastic, they paid $700,000. Even if it does get recycled, it’s not that great. It uses enormous resources (read carbon emissions) to break materials down and remanufacture them. Why are we doing this year after year? Is there no better way?

Reduce, reuse, recycle. It’s a mantra we’ve heard all our lives. But what kind of realistic options are there for reuse? You can reuse your shopping bag but that’s all we really have right now. We need a system that’s as convenient as disposables. That’s the purpose of this petition. We want to show businesses, investors and politicians that there’s a huge amount of people interested in these services and initiatives.

Consumers demand a better way to do business:
Reusable Takeout and Delivery services
Seamless, Grubhub, Caviar we’re looking at you. Let us give our old containers back to you. Wash them and distribute them back to restaurants for reuse. It could save $ for restaurants.

Covid update: Have any of you walked around the streets lately? Every restaurant is using disposable plastic. There's is sooo much plastic waste. Show your support for restaurants that offer reusable cups and plates by signing this petition.

Reusable Catering for Events
Ever been to the end of a festival or office party? There’s trash everywhere. It doesn’t have to go to a landfill. Let’s have a system for washing it and using it again.

Reusable Containers at Supermarkets
Key Foods, Whole Foods, Met, and Associated Grocers. We’re looking at you. What if we could return the food containers to the supermarket we purchased it from? They could be washed and used again. It could create jobs for NYC. It doesn’t make sense to use fossil fuels to make plastic that is shipped from 2000 miles form China to be used 1 time.

Anyway, this is just the tip of the iceberg. I’m sure there’s a lot of better ideas to come but let’s make it happen. Show your support for this initiative sign the petition. And companies we’re here waiting for you. Let us know when you’re in town.

Sincerely,
Consumers of New York
