Having students in the buildings during lunch has always been a crucial part of a middle school environment. Teachers can host clubs, host test re-takes, and keep students in their class during lunch as punishment. By not allowing students to be in the buildings during lunch, the district is demolishing a productive school environment.

One way this affects school life is by preventing lunchtime clubs from operating. Last year, one teacher hasted a magic club during lunch. This was a fun experience to enjoy on Tuesdays, and it allowed students to socialize with people who share their interests. By banning students from buildings, the district is permanently disbanding these clubs. Some teachers have proposed using a pass system (where students receive a pass from their teachers to access the building.) While this can help with individual student cases, providing an entire club with passes every week is tiresome and annoying.

Students also need to be allowed in buildings during lunchtime for disciplinary reasons. Sometimes, a teacher will punish a student by keeping them after class. If students are not allowed in the building, then they cannot be punished. There is still the alternative of using lunch detention. However, sometimes teachers only want to punish a student for a short amount of time (lunch detentions are only allowed to last for half of a student's break time according to BUSD district policy 5144.2, but that can be up to 16 minutes.) The teacher could want to talk with the student, something that they are not able to do during a lunch detention.

Some students also like to work on their classwork during lunch. As the Editor and Chief of the Willard newspaper, I need to work on the paper during lunch, and I would like to be able to converse with the staff supervisor about the content the paper is producing when I am working. By not allowing students to be in the buildings during lunch, the district is limiting the productivity of some students. The library at Willard has computers. However, it is often hard to access one during lunch because there are only eight computers in total. There are often people talking loudly near the computer area or playing games on the computers, which can be distracting. The games that people are playing can also slow down the computers (they all run off of two towers,) making it hard to work.

The buildings should be opened back up to students at lunch because it will allow clubs and meetings to take place during lunch, and will allow students who seek more out of their classes and electives to succeed. It would make Willard a better place.
