Hello everyone,

The reason I created this petition is quite simple. Our flag is in dire need of a redesign. I feel that our current flag does not capture the great community this city has to offer. Here are some of the reasons why it should be changed.

The major part of the flag is the Bird. A blue bird, against a bright yellow wavy stripe. I have no idea what this means. On a flag, you should be able to pick out the symbolism right away. It’s complicated, overdrawn, and looks angry, which does not represent Burnaby at all.

You should be able to draw a good flag from memory. Think of our Canadian flag. Simple, Symbolism is clear, It looks clear and concise on a flagpole, and a child could draw it from memory. Even with the Current flag in front of me, I don’t think I could draw it well.

And finally, the design hasn’t been updated in nearly ten years. Ten years, we’ve had this flag representing Burnaby. It’s due time for a change.

Some of the suggestions I’ve got from our community members include just the City Logo on a blue white background, a bird or flower to represent our amazing environment, trails, or parks, and a mountain top to signify Burnaby Mountain in our flag. Anyone of these would be better then our current flag.

Do you really want this flag representing Burnaby? If we can’t change it, it could stay for another five, ten, or maybe even fifteen years, flying over this community. If you don’t want to let this continue, sign this petition. 

With this petition, we are targeting the Burnaby City Council along with Mayor Mike Hurley. This flag needs to change. It’s about city pride, it’s about coming together, and overall, it’s about proving that change can be achieved when you put in the time.
