BUSINESS OPERATORS AND RESIDENTS IN PROXIMITY TO THE HOMELESS SHELTER AT 2294 DOUGLAS RD.

RE: OPPOSITION TO THE LOCATION OF THE 24-HOUR HOMELESS SHELTER

Who we are: The Block Watch of 2200 & 2232 Douglas Rd invite neighbouring residents and business operators to help support our cause in asking The City of Burnaby, BC Housing and Progressive to relocate the 24-hour Homeless Shelter scheduled to open late Summer 2019 at 2294 Douglas Rd. This has implications on everyone living or working in proximity to the shelter.

Background: This summer, BC Housing and Progressive Housing Society (Progressive) will be opening a 24-hour temporary shelter with 38 beds for people experiencing homelessness in Burnaby, at 2294 Douglas Road. It is scheduled to be in operation for 36 months with a possibility for another 1 year extension at the end of its initial term.

Why we are against it: We are concerned with the types of issues (such as: increase in property related crime, increase in open drug use, increase in improperly discarded drug paraphernalia or bio-hazardous material, increase in new unfamiliar faces or suspicious people/loitering in the area if turned away from a full shelter, decrease in area cleanliness, and a decrease in overall impressions of safety and security of our neighbourhood) that may arise with the implementation of a shelter within our community.

Area residents and business operators were not consulted on this matter which impacts them the most. Information on the opening of the shelter were provided to residents with short notice. Small information sessions did little to answer our questions and concerns thoroughly and informatively.

What we seek: We strongly object the decision by Burnaby City Council, BC Housing and Progressive Society in the location selected for the 24-hour Homeless shelter and formally request they re-evaluate their hasty decision. Please show your support by signing this petition.
