Kristen Davidson started this petition to Bureau of Indian Affairs and

I am writing this petition for my ancestors homeland to become federally recognized by the Department of Indian Affairs. I would also implore a public apology for the genocide that occurred during the rush for gold.

My mother, Susan, is 100% Wintu Indian. She has family buried  in the land that was once the territory of her tribe.

This tribe was not your archetypal American Indian. They were a gentle people. The women were gatherers, whereas the men were hunters and fishermen. They used ground up acorn for flour. They called the owl chooskadoo(Choose-ka-do). The Wintu lived in an array of types of wigwam. Being as how they were a docile people, they did not have much to defend themselves against invaders.

During the gold rush in California,  miners and local men were being paid by the United States Government to slaughter as many Natives as they could. These men were to bring the heads back. They did. The men all but wiped out the entire tribe. They beheaded men, women, and children. This was genocide. Genocide that makes slavery look like a flash in the pan. The UNITED STATES GOVERNMENT MURDERED A TRIBE OF INDIANS FOR GOLD.

I believe the Wintu Indian Tribe deserves the right to be recognized. I also believe that the President should Take a Stand and give them their do. Give my family the respect they didn't get over 100 years ago. We were AND are humans. Our story has been hidden or removed from the world. Yet we live and breathe. We get up and go to work. We pay taxes. WE ARE HUMAN TOO.
