Change Unfair Bullers Wood Uniform Rules

Our current Sixth Form uniform code has been changed to better reflect the school's attitude towards gender equality and the LGBT community by merging the 'Girls' and 'Boys' sections into one uniform code for all. However, these changes came with some extreme changes for the uniform conventionally worn by the girls, which are unnecessary and would force many girls to buy a complete new Sixth Form uniform after a year in the Sixth Form.

We want to work together with the school to create a uniform code that is acceptable for all parties involved, combining gender neutrality, presentation, and practicality.

This is our new uniform code:

Sixth Form students may choose from:

  • Traditional two-piece matching suit, incorporating a tailored jacket and trousers/skirt in conventional colours, ie brown, blue, grey, or black. Trousers should be full length. Skirts must be worn with tights and be mid-thigh length as a minimum.
  • Conventional buttoned shirt/blouse with collar. Shirts/blouses must be tucked in at all times. Shirts/blouses must cover shoulders and midriff and must not be low cut. A tie is optional.
  • A plain fine knitted v-neck jumper or cardigan in a conventional colour can be worn under the suit jacket.
  • Plain smart shoes in a single dark colour. Heels should be less than 5cm high. Boots no higher than the ankle.
  • Fabric coat with long sleeves. Large logos, denim, leather, suede, PVC and fur coats/jackets are not allowed.

However, we are concerned that dresses are no longer permitted, and that smart shirts which would be acceptable in a work environment but which are not buttoned up would also be banned. Many girls are currently using these two options as a regular part of their uniform, while still looking smart. Additionally, girls' suits are often bought separately, rather than matching the jacket and trousers. Requiring a match may mean most girls will have to buy a new uniform, despite their current uniform being acceptable for a workplace environment.

We recognise that the changes were made to make the Sixth Form community appear as smart as possible and to give us experience for a job, but we believe some of them were excessive, and are hoping the school is willing to discuss this further with the Sixth Form to reach an agreement.

Suggested new rules:

  • Sixth form students may choose from one of the following two options, combined with an appropriate tailored jacket or blazer:

     - A formal or office shirt with conventionally coloured (i.e. brown, blue, grey, or black) full-length trousers or a skirt. Skirts must be worn with tights and be mid-thigh length as a minimum.
     - A dress, worn with tights and mid-thigh length as a minimum.
  • All button-up shirts must be tucked in at all times.
  • All shirts should cover shoulders and midriff and must not be low cut.
  • A tie is optional.
  • A plain fine knitted jumper or cardigan in a conventional colour can be worn under the jacket.
  • Plain smart shoes in a single dark colour. Heels should be less than 5cm high. Boots no higher than the ankle.
  • Fabric coat with long sleeves. Large logos, denim, leather, suede, PVC and fur coats/jackets are not allowed.
