SMA Projects wants to build a 20 storey, multi-use apartment tower over the rail lines of Windsor Station. This would be the tallest building in the neighbourhood, unrivalled by any other and not in line with the heritage of the precinct. Stonnington City Council have rightfully listened to the outcry of the public and have rejected the planning permit. SMA projects have since applied to VCAT to overturn the decision, sighting no visual impact or detriment to the character of Windsor, irrespective of the fact that it would dominate the streetscape and be the most prominent architectural feature of the quaint, boutique district of Chapel Street.
The building itself does offer benefits to the community and supports environmental innovation however, the height of the apartment tower above the community space will absolutely alter the streetscape of Chapel Street and be the start of a new apartment tower district, much like the disappointment we see in South Yarra.
This petition would be the voice of the neighbourhood to tell VCAT how this building will impact the experience of our beloved Windsor. It will support the conservation of Melbourne’s heritage for those that love and cherish it, not for developers who seek nothing but financial gain at the expense of the neighbourhood's heart.
As such, we seek height restrictions of no more than 12 storeys, or less, as proposed by the Stonnington City Council to planning Minister Richard Wynne and outlined in Stonnington's Planning Scheme.
