Why this petition matters

Started by Owen Greenberg

A developer is proposing to finally build a nice 7-storey building on an empty lot that has been vacant for years. A bunch of NIMBYs are trying to keep anything from going there except more houses and duplexes, but it's the perfect location for such a building! It's within easy walking and biking distance of downtown, it nearly touches the nearby Sobeys, and it's within a 5-minute walk of the Halifax Forum. It's a great place to catch buses going wherever you need to be.

The proposal from 9 years ago that was shot down by the same empty-lot-dealers looks wonderful. It fits the character of the neighbourhood perfectly and will go a long way toward building up Windsor Street as a pleasant and walkable place to live.

Another petition states that it will both "increase traffic" and "do nothing to alleviate the housing crisis". I suggest that these critiques are contradictory when discussing new housing development. If it increases traffic, then someone is driving those cars. However, since the area is so transit-accessible and walkable, most aspects of people's lives can be done without even driving.

While the city needs to do more than just build, we cannot get out of this housing crisis with a sub-1% vacancy rate. Let's build density where it belongs: along transit corridors like Windsor Street, within walkable distance of amenities like grocery stores and community centers, and within an easily accessible distance of downtown.
