Why this petition matters

Started by Sarah Bjornson

California Lutheran University has many practice facilities for athletic teams on campus, including Samuelson Aquatics Center, William Rolland Stadium, and Hutton Field. However, it lacks a track despite having an NCAA recognized track team. The track team has to have practices in miscellaneous areas throughout the larger community, including Moorpark High School, Westlake High School, and Malibu High School. Commuting 15-45 minutes to get to practice every day is very time consuming and costs a lot of money for the athletes.

Given the recent loss of North Field, which was the track team's only existing practice space on campus, the track team and CLU community are now demanding to see fair treatment and recognition from the university. As an NCAA recognized sport and one of the largest teams on campus, why is the school taking away the athletes resources instead of finally building a proper track on campus? The school has been making empty promises to build a track on North Field for over a decade and no action has been taken besides giving the field to the Angels FC. The school has been given more than enough funds to build a track in the last few years from donors, the LA Rams, and now the Angels FC.

Building a track is not just for the track team; it is for the community. Tracks are a good way to get community members to stay active and go for runs and walks on an even ground. Across the street from the university is a retirement home that houses many elderly community members that would be able to use the track for exercising.

As a community, we demand to see a change in the way our university delegates our spaces and spends its funds. Given the influx of money coming into the school from professional teams to use our spaces, we deserve to be given a new track starting immediately so that track and field athletes can finally have a space to practice and compete on campus, and CLU community members can have a space to run, jog, and walk. Our goal is to have the university build a track by Spring 2023 but this is only possible if immediate action is taken. We are using this petition to demonstrate to California Lutheran University how much the CLU community wants to see a change in this school and build new facilities instead of giving them away. We appreciate any help we can get to make this happen!
