Build a crosswalk at the intersection of Broad River Rd & Riverhill Cir
Why this petition matters
What is the problem?
Currently there is no way to safely cross the street at Broad River Road and Riverhill Circle. There are two bus stops on both sides of Broad River Road yet no crossing mechanism to ensure residents can safely cross to get home. There is also only access to the Riverwalk trail from the north side of the Broad River Road bridge thus making residents who live on the south side of the street have to cross to access the trail. The closest location's that have access to cross the street safely are at Broad River Road and Arrowwood Drive to the (3/4 of a mile/ 3,960 feet)west and River Drive and Clement Road to the (9/10 of a mile/ 4,940 feet)east.
Who is affected?
Residents who use the bus stop on the south side of the street is the Broad Riverhill East Bound stop which is stop number #105 on line 88. The bus stop on the north side of the street is the Broad River West Bound stop which is stop number #075 on line 88. Many residents of the area use the bus. Also since there is riverwalk trail access along the Broad River Road Bridge, those residents who live on the south side of the street would like to be able to safely cross the street to access the trail.
What is the solution?
South Carolina Department of Transportation(SCDOT) and the City of Columbia should take action to ensure the safety of all its residents. Funding a project to install a crosswalk at Broad River Road and Riverhill Circle would ensure public safety and would be the most cost effective and easiest solution. If we can get a crosswalk installed, residents can safely cross the street in both directions and slow traffic. Ideally a crew should install striping across Broad River Road and a push button signal that lights when a pedestrian pushes the button. Signage would also be installed instructing drivers to slow down to a stop while pedestrians are crossing the street.
This project will be a great addition to our community! It will promote public safety and enhance community enjoyment of our area. Please write our elected officials whose emails can be found below and explain to them that you feel a crosswalk at Broad River Road and Riverhill Circle would be a great project to install!
