We, the undersigned business owners, workers, shoppers, commuters, and civic organizations write to ask you to support the reopening of our community by establishing a Busway on Main Street as well as Open Streets for local residents and businesses.

As you know, Main Street is one of the busiest and most vibrant streets in New York City, home to many of the small businesses that have helped Flushing thrive. Prior to the pandemic, our neighborhood was the largest multi-modal transportation hub and had the highest pedestrian count outside of Manhattan.

As it stands, Main Street has no capacity for additional cars relative to the incredible number of shoppers, workers, and visitors who walk and ride the buses, subway, and LIRR through the commercial and transit hub at the heart of Flushing. The many transit options available in Downtown Flushing help make our community vibrant and prosperous. According to the DOT, less than 20% of people traveling to Main Street arrive by car. Supporting innovative strategies that benefit the majority of our local residents and businesses is the only fair and equitable way to move forward with the reopening of our community.

Our business community was devastated by the COVID-19 pandemic and we must do all we can to help them get back on their feet. Restaurants have been especially hard-hit and we expect a third of them not to reopen. Dramatically increasing foot traffic and opening up street space for local cafes, bakeries, teahouses, and restaurants to serve customers in a safe environment will be critical to bringing back customers to the downtown Flushing commercial center.

The benefits of installing a busway on Main Street and opening up additional public space for businesses, shoppers, and residents of Downtown Flushing are many. Faster, safer, and more attractive bus service will help reinvigorate public transit along the commercial corridor and bring customers back to the area. Encouraging greater transit use will lead to a decrease in air and noise pollution. With fewer cars on the road, Downtown Flushing residents, business owners, and employees will have the space they need to safely walk, take faster transit, and serve their customers.

Opening up our streets to pedestrians, transit riders, and customers will be a clear signal to New York City that Flushing is open for business. Our businesses need space on the street to continue to build Flushing as a destination for tourism, shopping, and economic activity for the entire New York metropolitan region.
