Omoyele Sowore is a Nigerian human rights activist, pro-democracy campaigner, former presidential candidate, and founder of an online news agency Sahara Reporters that focuses on uncovering political scandal and corruption in Nigeria.

On August 3 2019, Sowore was arrested on charges of  treason against the government claiming the activist planned to overthrow the current administration after he called for a protest dubbed “Revolution Now.” He also faces money laundering and cyber-stalking the president of Nigeria.

Despite a judge granting him and his co-defendant Olawale Bakare bail in October with the case ongoing, They were kept in State Security Service (SSS) custody until a brief release on Thursday, December 5 2019, after the court gave the agency a 24 hours ultimatum. Sowore appeared in court once again on Friday, after being released on bail in federal court the previous day. During his appearance, Sowore was again forcefully taken into their custody. While the reason for his rearrest remains unclear. The incident compounds growing concerns around deteriorating freedom of speech and press rights in Nigeria.

On December 11, The Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mr. Abubakar Malami (SAN), has taken over the case against the #RevolutionNow protests convener, Omoyele Sowore, from the Department of State Services.

Amnesty International Nigeria in a statement said “The attempted abduction and eventual rearrest of prisoners of conscience Omoyele Sowore and Olawale Bakare, including the desecration of the Nigerian judiciary by SSS officials, tells a bigger story of impunity and flagrant disregard for the rule of law by the Nigerian government,” Amnesty International also declared Sowore and Bakare and another journalist Agba Jalingo, detained over treason charges as prisoners of conscience.

Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights states that "Everyone has the right to freedom of opinion and expression; this right includes freedom to hold opinions without interference and to seek, receive and impart information and ideas through any media and regardless of frontiers"

Section 39(1) of the Nigerian 1999 Constitution provides that "Every person shall be entitled to freedom of expression, including the freedom to hold opinions and to receive and impart information without interference."

Nigeria is a democratic state and tyranny must be completely frowned upon. President Buhari is running Nigeria like a military regime. We need the world to to join us to demand that this government restore order and rule of law. Nigeria government release Omoyele Sowore and others now!!!
