The City of Lakewood is reviewing a proposed commercial development at the corner of Edwards and Detroit, across from Edward's Park to establish a Lakewood Truck Park. Lakewood Truck Park, as it is presently called, will be a Food Truck Park and Beer Garden that will include a parking demand higher than the City's Parking Code.
The proposed commercial development will cater to non-Lakewood businesses in the form of Food Trucks that will compete directly with Lakewood businesses. This proposal contemplates a rotating schedule of food trucks that will maximize the opportunities and benefits for non-Lakewood businesses and increase the number of Lakewood businesses negatively impacted. There are no known plans for the City of Lakewood to collect taxes from the non-Lakewood businesses that would be invited to earn revenue in the City.
A parking demand created by the Food Truck Park that exceeds the City's Parking Code will also impact neighborhood residents, Edwards' Park and recreation users, and traffic on Detroit Avenue. Increased traffic and outdoor alcohol consumption pose dangers to children who use Edwards' Park.
The Food Truck Park, which includes an open "four-seasons" room that may be open as close to 365 days a year as possible with the use of fire pits, heaters, and bourbon with capacity of about 280 people outdoors and in the open which will create potential noise problems year round.
We, the residents and business owners of Lakewood, love the peacefulness of our community and would prefer to support local businesses and prevent parking and noise problems and, therefore, oppose development of a Truck Park.
