Save Bellandur Lake, Save Bangalore

Bellandur Lake is a waterbody in the suburb of Bellandur in the southeast of the city of Bengaluru and is the largest lake in the city. It is part of the Bellandur drainage system in a city, that had once boasted of a wonderful network of interconnected lake system. However, Bellandur has been in the news for all the wrong reasons in the past one year and yet, the authorities haven't found reasons good enough to address the issue on an emergency basis.

Development is a good idea but not at the cost of our lives. Bengaluru, our very own Silicon Valley has been in the grasp of toxic fumes once again and the reason behind the lake catching fire is no different from what it had been last two times. Survey Reports claim that the problem is a two-decade old one, only to be aggravated by the unbridled developmental activities of the unconcerned and the apathetic. The lake has now become a repository of an alarming quantity of phosphorus and oil which is just a mere response to the fact of spilling over of the waterbody with harmful chemicals (that get spewed from the untreated general sewage of the city as well as waste from the factories).

It is a matter of grave concern that the civic bodies responsible for the upkeep of the water quality is still to look into the matter although it is for the third time that the lake has caught fire and engulfed the surrounding areas with a thick cloud of chemical smoke, resulting in causing great inconvenience for the residents, leaving alone the fact of health hazards.

We, as responsible citizens of this country, have time and again respected our democratic credentials to the best of our abilities by electing apparently responsible dignitaries on our behalf to make our country a better place to live in. But it is also quite often that, especially after incidents like this, that representative democracy takes a backseat and the onus falls upon each individual being to take up the cudgel and reform the society for our own good. Today it is Bellandur, tomorrow it might be another waterbody in another city of our country. So it's time to inflict a good jerk to the civic bodies and the responsible ministry and save Bellandur until it gets too late to do anything.
