Save Citizens Advice Broxbourne so we can provide the vital service that helps so many

Active for over 20 years, Citizens Advice Broxbourne has supported and worked with many thousands of individuals and families in the Broxbourne, Cheshunt, Hoddesdon and Waltham Cross areas with a wide range of problems.

However,  Broxbourne Borough Council is cutting our funding.   Already they have imposed a 20% cut for 2016/17 with a further 20% in 2017/18.   And they are looking to cease funding altogether in 2018/19.  This latter proposal is currently part of a Borough-wide consultation where we are one of many services  being affected.

The cuts imposed have already seen a number of redundancies in our team including money advisors and support staff and we have had to revise our opening hours.

The final proposed cut would deem the Bureau's viability to continue impossible unless new avenues of revenue can be found.  We are of course looking but it's a competitive marketplace and it takes time which we don't have much of.

The reduced service - and potential closure - of the Bureau will have numerous long-term ramifications for the people we are here to help.

Citizens Advice Broxbourne provides value for money - indeed some of the Borough's funding is returned to them via rent and service charges - and is an essential service delivery partner.    Last year alone, over 3,000 people came to us for guidance and about 12,000 different issues; these represented housing, debt and financial management, welfare and relationships amongst other things.

On a personal and practical level, many of our clients have used the phrases “priceless”, “life-changing” and “invaluable”.   They come to us with worries around money, employment – or lack of it, benefits, legal issues, and many other things.   These can be stressful times for them.   However, we know that by offering a place that gives them a safe environment in which to talk about these concerns and a helping hand in sorting them out, we change lives, alleviate stress and depression, keep families together, manage debt, allay depression and street and in some instances, prevent suicide.   In essence we provide hope and a new sense of confidence and purpose.

We urge the Broxbourne Borough Council to reconsider their financial support of Citizens Advice Broxbourne and would encourage everyone who have received help from Citizens Advice or who supports the important work we undertake to sign this petition.

Thank you.
