Brownsville ISD Employees Deserve More Pay for Distance Learning
Why this petition matters

AOBE/TSTA/NEA continuously advocates for our members as well as offers suggestions to address current issues and concerns. During these unprecedented times, the commitment and dedication from BISD employees, allowed BISD to complete the 19-20 school year and remain in compliance with TEA. For being in compliance, BISD qualified for $19,709,168 in the CARES Act Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief Fund.
Even though BISD employees were going through the pandemic themselves, and through so much uncertainty, they did not hesitate to find ways to continue to provide instructional and emotional support to our students during this pandemic. BISD employees wasted no time in adapting to the transition of having to carry out distance learning. Many, and in many different positions and/or capacities, had to stretch their personal budget to meet their work related needs in order to make sure all areas were covered for the student’s of BISD. This transition caused financial and mental hardship to many BISD employees. Employees pushed through providing the best distance learning possible in spite of the daily changes of demands by the district which caused many to end their day in emotional turmoil or in tears. Now is a time, more than ever, to show EVERY BISD employee how grateful BISD needs to be for their commitment. While we do appreciate the raises being recommended for employees in the 2020-2021 school year, even though we have some concerns with some areas needing adjustments but the employees deserve more. Therefore, after reviewing BISD’s financial state from the 2018-2019 Comprehensive Annual Financial Report filed thorough TEA’s Annual Financial & Compliance Report and seeing a healthy fund balance of over $200,000,000 & the additional $19,709,168 from the CARES Act, we recommend the employees receive the following amounts recommended by TASB for the 2020-2021 school year in addition to a stipend to end this current school year:
- provide a stipend of $1,500 at the end of this current contract year for all certified personnel
- provide a stipend of $1,000 at the end of this current contract year for all classified personnel
