Karen Donahue started this petition to Brown University

Brown University announced in a press release on Friday, May 29th that they are cutting 11 varsity sports as part of their ‘Excellence in Brown Athletics Initiative’. The teams that were cut — men's and women’s fencing, men's and women’s golf, women’s skiing, men's and women’s squash, women’s equestrian, and men’s track, field, and cross country — will transition to club status.

Opportunity and diversity stand out among the concerns held by many. Men's track and field, in particular, brings student-athletes of color to campus, giving them Ivy League opportunities they might not otherwise find. Meanwhile, club co-ed sailing and club women’s sailing (historically a white dominated sport) will move up to varsity status.

Brown University totes their belief in diversity while their actions show otherwise by making these cuts as well as featuring two of their white coaches recently on ‘Black Out Tuesday’. It’s time to put an end to Brown Athletics making a profit off of people’s ignorance. Please sign this petition if you want to make a stand against their hypocrisy and refuse to attend their ticketed athletic competitions.
