Almost a year into this pandemic and our children are still not back in live, interactive, traditional classes.

In early October, BCPS moved to eLearning Phase 2, which essentially moved eLearning from home to school properties for those who opted to participate.  In addition, the Board decided that the structure of eLearning Phase 2 would be synchronized learning for students both at home and in classrooms.  Which has brought up its own list of short-comings. While many students had the fortune of having their teacher live in class, thousands of others floated from space to space where each day brought inconsistent adult supervision over their educational and technological needs. It was, and still is, not a true face-to-face experience for students and teachers.

Unfortunately, due to the lukewarm reception eLearning Phase 2 received from countless students and teachers alike, BCPS is among the lowest in-person attendance in Florida. According to a recent article in Sun Sentinel, 65% of Florida students are going to school, whereas the average in-person learning in Broward is merely 26%. [1]

Worldwide, statistics have clearly shown that schools, especially for younger cohorts, are not where COVID is spreading.  Additionally, the CDC and almost every global health agency has advocated in support of children to return to schools, for live, face-to-face instructions.  Those schools which have already done so have seen very little virus spreading issues, even during recent spikes in cases, opting to keep schools open even as other public spaces have closed.

Given all this, it is in the best interests of our children from a educational, emotional, mental, and social perspective, to return them full-time to the school properties for face-to-face, authentic schooling with appropriate safety protocols in place.

No more synchronous teaching and learning. We want real interaction, and high-quality education for our children.

If you advocate for a K-8 student or classroom in Broward County, sign this petition and let’s start Phase 3 on January 4th, 2021!!
