On November 28, 2011, Jason Evert, a Catholic author affiliated with The Chastity Project, came to speak to the collective school communities of Brophy College Preparatory and Xavier College Preparatory.

Some disturbing information came in the form of a pamphlet Evert handed out to the Brophy student body called Pure Manhood.

Pure Manhood is structured in a question and answer format with one section being entitled “What if you have homosexual attractions?”

In this section, we feel like Evert laid out egregious, offensive, homophobic, and blatantly hurtful comments about members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender community.

Here is the section in Pure Manhood entitled "What if you have homosexual attractions?"

"The world tells people who have same-sex attractions that they have two options: either hide in the closet in fear or come out, embrace your identity, and sleep with whoever you want. Acknowledging your attractions but living a pure life isn't even proposed as a realistic choice, because the world assumes that sex equals love, and no one should have to live without love.

A guy who has these attractions may not want them, or even know where they're coming from. Perhaps they stem from an unhealthy relationship with his father, an inability to relate to other guys, or even sexual abuse. Whatever the case may be, purity will help him understand the origin of his feelings.

Every guy needs male approval as part of becoming a man. But in this need for masculine love, some guys may question their identity and try to find it in sex. But that will not satisfy their calling to make a total gift of themselves. The homosexual act is disordered, much like contraceptive sex between heterosexuals. Both acts are directed against God's natural purpose for sex -- babies and bonding.

Even if a person does not believe in God, he cannot argue with nature. For example, the life expectancy of homosexual men is half that of heterosexual men. Furthermore, imagine what would happen if all people with same-sex attractions were placed in their own country. It would be empty in a century, because bodies of the same gender are not made to receive each other. Even if a man has same-sex attractions, his body is heterosexual. He was designed to give life.

If you struggle with same-sex attractions, realize that you are not alone. God loves you and has a plan for your life. The Church has a network of those who carry the same cross and choose to glorify God with their bodies (see www.couragerc.net)"

We feel that in this statement are ignorant and malicious misconceptions. We as students at Brophy and Xavier feel compelled to act out.

According to the Suicide Prevention Resource Center, an estimated 30%-40% of LGBT youth have attempted suicide.

Unaccepting environments are key components to that suicide rate, and we feel that Evert’s comments on homosexuality only increase intolerance.

The Catholic nature of Brophy and Xavier stresses a culture of tolerance and unity, yet we feel Everet’s divisive rhetoric accomplishes only further alienation and hate between people of different backgrounds and sexual orientations.

According to Catholicism in the Third Millenium: ''It is clear today that a person does not choose to be homosexual, even if we are not yet sure what causes a homosexual orientation. The Catechism of the Catholic Church acknowledges that a homosexual orientation is not a matter of choice (2358)."

Evert cites a source saying that a gay man’s life expectancy is half that of a straight man’s. He uses this statistic to express an opinion that homosexuality is condemned by nature or God. The argument that AIDS or teen suicides are natural proof of the disorder of homosexuality is in our minds extremely hateful, and is not supported in any way by Catholic theology.

As signers of this petition we reject what we feel to be homophobic assertions, and call on the administrations of Xavier and Brophy to formally issue remarks condemning Evert’s divisive and backward claims in Pure Manhood.

We call on both the Brophy and Xavier administration to shed light on their policies toward minority students suffering from discrimination and bullying and to truly work towards fostering an accepting and Christ-like environment.

We feel that the exclusionary bigotry of Jason Evert must be addressed and we hope our voices will be heard.

With the utmost respect,

The students of Brophy and Xavier College Prep and concerned individuals
