BHS Desis started this petition to Brookline Public Schools

Brookline High School has several Category II Holidays - meaning that homework is not assigned. Many Hindu/Islamic holidays are not given this respect, implying that our high school deems South East Asian culture of less significance.

Asian Americans constitute 19.8% of the Brookline High School student body, and South East Asians would like to have their voices heard and cultures respected. This would mean ensuring a freedom to practice their religions on days of cultural significance in Hinduism and Islam.

We would like these following actions to be taken:

• Enforce these established holidays! Eid Al Fitr and Eid Al Adha are counted as Category II, but BHS did not hold teachers accountable to enforce this policy, unlike their policies with Jewish holidays and the Lunar New Year.

• Introduction of Category II Holidays for:
   - Diwali
   - Holi
• Acknowledgement of the holidays being based on the Lunar Calendar, and can change in dates.
• Acknowledgement that these holidays can last over multiple days, and that the holidays would be made based on the final day of these events.

Thank you for supporting our cause,

The BHS Desi American Club Presidents
