Rachel Burke started this petition to Brookings City Council

After becoming a COVID-19 hotspot AND a White House “Red Zone” on August 30, the City Council refuses to take any decisive action.

Over 41% of new Brookings tests come back positive, even though we’ve doubled the number of tests in the last week.

According to the city’s own epidemiologist, as of September 2nd, Brookings has an infection rate value of 3.0. Each positive case infects -- on average -- 3 other people.

These new cases aren’t just because there is an influx of SDSU students -- it’s because people aren’t being responsible.

Without restricting attendance at bars, Brookings will be forced to adopt Phase II legislation that -- among other things -- closes all bars, restaurants, and gyms completely. This will harm a lot more small businesses in town.

We believe that the proposed amendments to 20-010 that include

  • Limiting gatherings in residential areas to 10 non-family members
  • Closing bars from 10pm - 7am
  • Requiring masks in all indoor public spaces

would help cull the spread of COVID 19 in Brookings, pushing back a potential transition into Phase II.

Masks are required on campus and in the school system already. Requiring masks in public spaces and cutting down on large parties would help slow the spread of the virus.

Phase II will soon become necessary for Brookings. The only thing we can hope to do is delay the economic harms that come with it.
