Broadview United started this petition to Broadview Hotel Management

Sign this petition to support Broadview Hotel workers in their request that management extend the temporary layoff period and come to the bargaining table in good faith.

In these uncertain times, with COVID-19 impacting the hospitality industry so significantly, it's important that we take action to maintain whatever job security we can achieve for ourselves. Unlike many other hospitality businesses in Toronto that are closing their doors indefinitely due to COVID-19, the Broadview Hotel as a part of Streetcar Developments has the capacity to bounce back and eventually operate at full capacity again.

It would cost the company nothing to keep employees on the recall list indefinitely, and the cost of losing these jobs will not only be felt in the hospitality industry, either; if we lose these jobs, we risk doing potentially irreparable damage to the arts, non-profit and food scenes in Toronto. This is because many people who work at the Broadview Hotel are artists, musicians, comedians and actors who contribute greatly to Toronto's entertainment scene. These jobs allow people working in non-profits to supplement their income with a shift or two a week. The late hours and trade-off between low-pay-in-exchange-for-tips that come with working in this industry mean that these jobs provide people with the flexibility and opportunity to support themselves between gigs or contracts, and this in turn helps Toronto thrive as a dynamic place to live and visit.

There are also exceptional talents who work on the bars and in the kitchen, elevating the food experience in Toronto, which has been renowned both locally and nationally. The unionized work that has made the Broadview Hotel a success deserves job security in this uncertain time.

A conciliator has been appointed by the Ministry of Labour to force the company to the bargaining table, but we are asking for the support of our communities at this time because pressure from the public is the most effective way of convincing management to do the right thing by their workers. We are asking as your neighbors, your dog-walkers, your park-visitors, your farmer's market patrons-- and as people who help make this community great. Help us show the Broadview Hotel what it really means to be "all in this together" by signing and sharing our petition. Our community IS their business, NOT the other way around!
