==== History and specifications of the ships ====

Bretagne was built at the Chantiers d'Atlantique Shipyard in St Nazaire. She was launched on 4 February 1989 and entered service on 16 July.

Bretagne was the first 'super ferry' to join the Brittany Ferries fleet and set new standards for ferry design and travel comfort.

Bretagne bears the most symbolic name in the fleet, being the French for "Brittany" itself; the region of North Western France where the company was started and is still based today. Over the years Bretagne has become a firm favourite with her passengers. She was originally designed for use on the Plymouth – Santander and Cork – Roscoff (with two sailings per week between Plymouth and Roscoff) routes to cope with expanding volumes of traffic but in 1993 she was transferred to the highly popular Portsmouth - St Malo route, where she remains today.

She was Brittany Ferries flagship until the arrival of ferry Val de Loire in 1993.
