Emily Sarsfield is Britain's no. 1 ranked woman in the sport of Ski Cross. Despite receiving no funding other than through sponsorship she generates herself, she has spent the last four years of her life working and training with her main goal to compete in the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia, after missing out on Vancouver 2010 with the after-effects of a horrific knee injury.

Ski Cross was a huge hit with fans and TV viewers on its debut at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver.  At the time, Emily was performing below her peak after she suffered a career-threatening knee injury 2009. The British team chose to send Sarah Sauvey instead, who had better form at the time. Emily did not contest this decision, but returned to training intent on winning a place in 2014.

In the 2010 season Emily created British Skiing history by becoming the first British Female Skier ever to win a Skiing Europa Cup race, and with a string of positive performances in World Cup events over the next few years, she finished 17th at the Ski Cross World Championships in November 2013. She recently satisfied the conditions set out by the International Ski Federation (FIS) to be invited to compete in Ski Cross for the British Olympic team at the 2014 Winter Olympic Games in Sochi.

Unfortunately, the FIS invitation came after the British team had been announced, and the British Olympic Association (BOA) have subsequently declined it, on the basis that Emily achieved the necessary ranking due to the retirement of another athlete. The decision has been endorsed by British Ski & Snowboard (BSS) who say they believe Emily is unlikely to put in a "credible performance" at the games. This, despite her 17th placed finish in the Ski Cross World Championships as recently as November.

We the friends, family, and many supporters of Emily, urge the BOA in the strongest possible terms to reverse their decision and accept Emily's place at Sochi 2014. We have no doubt she will put in a more than credible performance, showcase the sport of Ski Cross to the British people, and bring credit to the BOA and the BSS. It is also possible, thanks to her level of performances and the unpredictable nature of the sport, that she could win an Olympic medal. Most of all, though, she deserves the opportunity to compete having spent so long working so hard for this chance.
