Hanna Belal started this petition to BRITISH JUDO ASSOCIATION

I’ve been playing judo for years so I decided to go to a competition. I was very excited, however, when I was waiting for my turn, my judo coach came up to me and told me that the judges said that I couldn’t compete with my hijab on. We asked if we were allowed to wear a sports hijab but they didn’t allow us. They said that it was a matter of health and safety because apparently you could get strangled. The sports hijab, which we asked them if we could we are instead, had Velcro which would open if someone pulled it hard enough to strangle; it was a perfectly safe hijab to wear. Nobody, from any religion, should be told to take their religious garment off or told to wear it incorrectly. Why should someone in hijab be unable to compete just because of what they wear? I perfectly understand why they would be worried about health and safety, however, the sports hijab bypasses all of these concerns yet you still can’t wear it for competitions. If not for me, sign this for all the other passionate people who wear the hijab to have a chance to compete.

Thank you.
