Anne Ibasco started this petition to British Columbia Provincial Government and

Specific legislation needs to be put in place on a provincial level to make the pursuit of pay equity more actionable. Even with already existing federal legislation, proactive steps need to be taken in smaller scales to establish a system which does not just eliminate the disparity, but also ensures a lasting solution. The Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms prohibits discriminatory practices, however the province of British Columbia (BC) does not have any law that makes employers legally bound to pay men and women equally for the same work. Provinces such as Manitoba, Prince Edward Island, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Ontario, and Quebec have such legislation, however BC is still lacking. As of April 4th, 2019, new polls show 7/10 of the Canadian populace favour the implementation of equal pay legislation, though a private member's bill which would have main control over whether or not companies are held accountable for equal remuneration is presently failing to make progress in BC’s Legislative Assembly. Together as a society, we can start bringing greater equality to workplaces. If you believe in pay equity between males and females, I urge you to sign this petition!

It is the unchanged inequality that has incited females to see their true value, which is worth much more than they are being given credit for by society. The disparity in the wages between sexes is indicative to women that their work is not as valuable as the efforts of men. It is this idea of inferiority on the basis of gender which is fundamentally unacceptable. Democratic countries are considered some of the most progressed nations in terms of women’s rights. Individuals are able to use democratic ways such as through meetings, petition drives, lobbying, public speaking, and nonviolent resistance to affect change. Over the years, with decreasing the wage gap, dramatic social and legal reform has been created for women in areas such as religion, government, employment, and education. Younger feminists are finding inspiration from women who came before them, and are realizing the actions that need to be taken in pursuit of equality. The immense changes over the years in regards to women's rights did not happen in an instant, but were brought forth through the actions of generations of women, and even instances where men have worked in tandem in them. Together, we can influence positive change in our community!
