Philip Almendrala started this petition to Honourable Rob Fleming (British Columbia Minister of Education)

This is to appeal to the BC Government to include virtual learning program supervised by the school district for students from kindergarten to Grade 9 (K-9) in the coming school year until COVID-19 vaccine is available to BC residents. This will ensure that students continue to receive high standard of education that they deserve while not exposing themselves and their loved ones to the risk of contracting COVID-19 virus.

This will certainly help ensure that BC will continue to be successful in flattening the curve.

The current options of parents with children in K-9 are either home schooling or in person schooling, only.

Basic home-schooling program is disadvantageous to children specially if supervising parents are not properly trained as educators.  Virtual learning like what the government implemented towards the end of last school year, was well managed and deemed very effective given the situation. Professional BC teachers supervised and monitored children’s learning progress.

This petition is for the government to implement similar virtual learning program as an option. It was successful and was proven effective in helping flattening the curve. It was difficult to comprehend why the government did not offer this program for this coming school year most specially when the infrastructure to implement this are all available.

Many parents will support this. Reducing the number of in-person students will mean reducing the resources needed for the in-person learning program. These untapped resources can then be used for the virtual learning program. Furthermore, there will be cost-savings on Health Care. With this virtual learning program, there will be much smaller number of students at risk of exposure to the virus; there will be much smaller number of families at risk of exposure to the virus with students as the potential transmitters; thus, the probability of occurrence of outbreaks will also be much smaller. This supports the argument that virtual learning program can help reduce Health Care cost. It is certain that the mandatory in-person learning program will increase the risk of COVID-19 outbreak occurring, thus, increasing cost due to hospitalization of COVID-19 patients.

Any potential savings or any potential additional cost that will be incurred with the implementation of virtual learning program seems to be irrelevant when compared to lives that can be saved.
