Lauren Adair started this petition to British Association of Social Workers

I am a third year Social Work student from Northern Ireland, but studying at a University in England. As part of my Social Work training I have to attend a mandatory placement which will last for 100 working days. This placement is unpaid and it is a requirement that the student must pay for any placement costs themselves, for example: travel and accommodation. There is a Social Work Bursary that student's can apply for which grants them money to help with the cost of placement. Although there are many students that are stuck in my position. I do not qualify for the Northern Ireland Bursary as I am studying in England, and I also do not qualify for the English bursary as I am from Northern Ireland. This puts student's going through the same position as me in a situation where they are receiving no financial help with placement and having to personally save thousands of pounds to cover travel, accommodation and living costs. No student should have to save thousands of pounds to attend a 100 working day unpaid placement that is part of their education. I believe that all Social Work students should be entitled to a bursary to help with placement costs as it is unrealistic and damaging having to save up so much money to live for a long period of time while receiving no additional help.
