On the 7th of June 2020, Black Lives Matter protestors tore down the statue glorifying Edward Colston, a prominent and prolific slave trader.

This has already become a symbolic moment in the fight against racial inequality, garnering significant national and international coverage, with some comparing it to the toppling of the statue of Saddam Hussein in 2003.

I feel this offers a unique opportunity to replace a symbol that represents centuries-long hate and oppression with a prominent and inspiring black Bristolian, to serve as an example of the progression and change possible in society.
