On Wednesday 18th of March there will be a committee meeting deciding whether to approve planning permission to convert Lakota, the Coroners Court and the Beer Garden from music venues into blocks of flats.

Lakota is central to Bristol and the UK's underground music scene. With 30 years of history to its name, its been known as one of the most famous clubs in the country, right at the heart of the 90s rave scene and gaining Bristol its reputation as an epicentre of the underground music revolution. Losing Lakota would not only mean loosing an iconic venue, but a loss of community made up of people from all walks of life that have been brought together by the pure joy of music and the electric atmosphere Lakota creates. Its replacement with flats will only facilitate the gentrification of St Pauls and Stokes Croft, pushing out communities and other music venues that are fundamental to Bristol's soul, character and identity.

Although we acknowledge that Lakota's owners may want to retire their ownership of the club, we feel that it is highly important that the building remains a music venue which can continue to serve the city.

Bristol cannot afford to loose its community, its thriving music scene and a much loved club, all which also bring tourism and interest to this city in the first place. This petition aims to prove to committee members just how important Lakota and the music scene is and how detrimental approving a block of flats for the site will be.
