Briony Williams started this petition to Bristol City Council

Dear Bristol City Council,

I am writing to request that streets carrying the name Colston be renamed.

In the last few weeks, since the murder of George Floyd in America, the Black Lives Matter movement has spread across the world prompting people, like myself, to reflect on our lives, our actions, our inaction and the cities in which we live. I am born and bred Bristolian and I have always known that Edward Colston was a slave trader but it is something I chose to put to the back of my mind because it didn’t directly affect me. I cannot continue to do this. The name Colston carries with it centuries of Black oppression and we can’t bury our heads in the sand any longer.

Here is an excerpt about Edward Colston:

During the time of Colston's involvement with the Royal African company (1680 to 1692), it is estimated that the company transported around 84,000 African men, women and children, who had been traded as slaves in West Africa, of whom 19,000 died on their journey to the Caribbean and the Americas. Ship's crew mortality rates were often similar and sometimes greater than the mortality rates amongst the slaves.

How can we continue to honour his name in our city when he built his fortune on the lives of thousands of slaves? How can we legitimately still have street names, buildings and schools named after a slave trader? There has to be a change. Enough is enough.

Yours sincerely,

Briony Williams
