On March 31, 2022, Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Mississippi's contract with the University of Mississippi Medical Center expired. 

This is leaving thousands of patients with two options: find treatment elsewhere or enter into a self-pay agreement with the hospital and accept the debt of a lifetime. 

In an interview with Mississippi Insurance Commissioner Mike Chaney, it is noted that the termination of contract is a fight over rates - UMMC is the highest level hospital and receives the sickest people from all over the state, which means their cost of business is higher and Blue Cross Blue Shield does not want to pay those rates  

Fact of the matter is that UMMC is the home of the ONLY specialty Children’s Hospital in the State of Mississippi and BCBS is the largest insurer in the State of Mississippi.
