Why this petition matters

Started by Alfred GISBORNE

The majority of students at St Katherine's School do not live within walking distance of the school so they catch a bus (often more than one) every day. Unfortunately, the buses are terrible. There are school buses that only take students to school but they are very expensive and unaffordable for many families. Because of this, many students catch the X4, which is extremely unreliable and always full. This school year (2022/23), the X4 was supposed to come into the school to pick up and drop off students but this very rarely happens. This means it is common for the many students to miss the bus after school, resulting in waits of up to an hour for the next bus. On top of this, the bus is almost always full, meaning students and members of the public may be unable to get on.

However, it doesn't have to be this way. in the 2019/2020 school year, a second bus was provided on the X4 route twice a day specifically for students at St Katherine's. It meant there was more space for both students and members of the public. It also didn't leave after school until there were roughly the correct number of students on it, meaning it was almost impossible to miss it.

Unfortunately, it was cancelled in the first lockdown and never came back. The excuse given was that the school couldn't afford to rent out a bus every day. However, it was always busy, so the bus company must have made a large profit on the service even without being paid by the school.
