Why this petition matters

Started by Abbie Kirkwood

I am a sixth year pupil at Park Mains High School and we have been stripped of our common room. S6 have quite a lot of free periods this year and we have nowhere to study during them. We have to wander the street or sit in the noisy lunch hall were we are easily distracted. Currently the common room is being used as a pupil support room for kids with learning disabilities however my argument is that the school already has multiple pupil support rooms and more than enough to allow us our common room space. The common room provides us with a safe and quiet place to work and study without interruptions. It gives us the space we deserve as S6 as all years up until the class of 2021 have had access to one. There are also many empty classrooms around the school at a time, which would be suitable for S6s to study in, proving again that the school has enough space for a common area. I have discussed this with most of the year and the vast majority agree with my argument. If we were allowed a space as a common room not only would us senior pupils have a quiet space to study. But the younger years will also have more space at lunch and less disruptions from students wandering the halls during their free periods. Years before us were told that the common room was being restricted due to covid, but now there are no more covid measures in school preventing a common room. To add to these arguments many pupils feel as though they are missing out on an important part of sixth year as all of the other Renfrewshire schools have a common room along with most Scottish schools. Frankly it is unfair that we are being punished without reason and haven’t even been given a chance to show we can use a common area responsibly.
