Idaho needs to bring back open primaries!
Above: Voters gather at an open caucus during the 2016 Presidential Primary in Boise, Idaho. In fact, record crowds of voters forced the caucus to move to a nearby arena. Lines of people waiting to enter the caucus stretched a mile or more in several directions. Hundreds of voters who attempted to join the line at the deadline for entry were turned away.
For generations, Idaho voters enjoyed the freedom to vote for the candidates of their choice. No political party, politician, or faction was allowed to dictate their choices.
Then a small group sued to strip voters of their rights. They found a judge who agreed to take away our open primary.
In many states with a healthy two-party system, this may not have been much of a problem. However, Idaho has been a one-party state for a generation. That is not going to change anytime soon.
Most elections are decided in the Republican Primary, not the general election. Democrats and Independents do not even run candidates in many races around the state. So this change resulted in over half the voters losing their right to participate in the only important round of the election: the primary.
In short, a small group sued the state to take away our rights. They won, we lost.
These are public funded elections that more than half of voters can't vote in.
Urge the Governor and the Legislature to restore an open primary to Idaho. It's time the voters take back their freedom.
