Bring Back Halloween Haunt at Acton District School

The Issue

For more than 15 years Acton District School has a long standing tradition to put on a Halloween Haunt at the school that also brings in monetary and food donations to the local community.

The event also encouraged student leadership skills, student interface with the community & comradery between the students.

This year the Halton District School Board (HDSB) have announced that the Halloween Haunt at Acton District School is cancelled. The reasons provided to students were due to Covid, medical conditions that can trigger an epileptic seizure, and offensive to other religious organizations/sects and cultures that go against their belief system.

HDSB does not affiliate themselves with any religion or sect, nor do they discriminate against medical conditions, sex or race. They are publicly funded. If a parent chooses to send their child to a public school, instead of a private school or home education that is better suited towards their own belief system for their child, then they shouldn't dictate path forward in a public system.  Each family in the public system can make the decision for their own family whether or not to attend the Halloween Haunt event.

The Acton BIA was a strong supporter of the event. They also put on a trick or treat event in our local downtown community, but they don't do the Haunt as a way to support Acton District School.

HDSB is publicly funded and the Board of Trustees and Director is a voted in position.  Please consider signing this petition to request that HDSB bring back the long standing tradition that the students and the community as a whole love.

Thank you
