IF CLASS CUTS ARE NEEDED, PLEASE DO NOT CUT THE ONLY SOUND CLASSES THAT BERKELEY CC OFFERS. SOUND DESIGN 1 & 2 ARE VITAL TO THE CREATIVE VOICE OF OUR MULTIMEDIA STUDENTS AND FUTURE ARTISTS.

Sound Design, the only audio production class at Berkeley City College (BCC), a class vital to Multimedia production, a class that has creatively transformed hundreds of people's lives, has just been cut from the Spring 2012 schedule due to budget cuts in the state of California. It's a sad situation that public education is under fire, but if classes need to be cut, do not cut the only sound classes at BCC.

I teach at BCC because I believe that the more we know about creating with sound, music, and our voices, the more we can express our truth and love to the world. I believe that creativity liberates oneself, that we are all creators, and that we are all entitled to creative information and training at a reasonable price, if not free.

Students at BCC can take my sound course for around $100 and receive the same level of training that I provide to students at The Art Institute of San Francisco (AIISF) and The San Francisco Art Institute (SFAI), who pay over $50,000 a year. This class provides invaluable training in sound and music to those who can't afford incredibly high tuition. This class has run for 9 years with overwhelming enrollment. I have seen literally hundreds of students creatively transformed within this class- who now understanding how to approach sound in their creative process.

SOUND IS A CRITICAL COMPONENT OF MULTIMEDIA PRODUCTION. SOUND EXPRESSES CREATIVE IDEAS AND INFORMATION.

Ask any professional- Sound is the critical component of filmmaking multimedia and animations. Sound Design (148A and 148B), the only sound-related classes we at BCC, teach students how to edit, mix, and manipulate digital sound tools (Pro Tools, Ableton Live, numerous plug-ins) for films, music compositions, and radio, in addition to the physics and history of sound production in art and music. Those in charge of class cuts have decided to cut both Sound Design classes, inadvertently disregarding student need. This popular class has been incredibly successful for 9 years and provides students with high-caliber audio training with myself, Christopher Willits, MFA, a professional in the field.
