everyday since we’ve started schooling (preschool or elementary) we’ve always been told “breakfast is the most important meal of the day” and “it’s important to eat” and then the moment we have the chance to eat they take it? there are students who don’t get to eat at home, can’t stomach food so early in the morning, have late buses or don’t get to school on time when it isn’t their fault, and suffer the loss of their first meal of the day then go through at least three hours of school before POSSIBLY getting lunch. to tell us “just bring your snacks and sandwiches in brown paper bags” feels rather insensitive given the fact they don’t know our situations. i mean, there’s a reason we had free and reduced lunch our entire school year last year, students and families were struggling due to covid and who’s to say that isn’t still occurring?
