Problem
The provision of high quality vocational education facilities is incredibly important, and we commend the Greater Brighton Metropolitan College for making plans to expand this service in our ward.

However, the important provision of educational facilities in our ward should not compete with the provision of good quality housing for low income members of our community. Members of our community shouldn't have to be rich to be able to live in good quality accommodation within our ward. At this rate, half of our ward's residents will have to move out of it if they want to find accommodation that fits their budget.

The planned development by the Greater Brighton Metropolitan College is welcome news insofar as it promises to expand the provision of quality educational facilities. We would like the college to adapt its proposed provision of 135 residential homes to include some much needed "affordable" homes. On the current plans, none of those homes will be "affordable".

Solution
We ask the Planning Committee at the Council, as it is scheduled to consider this plan on Wednesday, 5th December, to defer decision pending the Brighton Metropolitan College adapting its plans to make sure at least 40% of the 135 homes on the plan meet the government's definition of "affordable" rent.
