BYU Classes Switched to Online Format for COVID-19 Should Use Pass/Fail Grading System

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, BYU has switched all face-to-face classes to a remote, or online, format. This change is a direct results of recommendations by Utah government officials and the Center for Disease Control. We are grateful that BYU has decided to prevent the spread of disease by limiting social contact; however, we hope that BYU can recognize the unique challenges that come with online classes and make necessary accommodations.

Many BYU professors are not familiar with teaching online courses. They may struggle to adapt their face-to-face curriculum to solely technology based. Additionally, many BYU students, including myself, have difficulties focusing for online classes. We also miss out on opportunities to get optimal feedback from professors and TA’s. Other BYU students have lost jobs due to the spread of COVID-19. Given these factors, it is reasonable that BYU change all classes to a Pass/Fail grading system, or give students the opportunity to withdrawal from these classes with a full refund and without any record on our transcripts.

Although these changes are necessary, they will not accurately reflect our academic success. If you agree, please sign this petition.
