Cargo theft poses significant losses to business, negatively impacts economic development and poses health and safety risks to the public. As a complex crime that is perpetrated over multiple jurisdictions, gaining law enforcement support is met with many challenges with crimes going unresolved allowing the criminal enterprise to continue to weaken the supply chain.

According to CargoNet’s Q3 data for 2020, Cargo Thefts in Georgia rose 112% year-over-year. This came as the Georgia Bureau of Investigation officially closed its statewide cargo theft investigative unit on 9/16/20. Increases in Georgia were due to a spike in reported crime in Chatham County, which has both theft groups and out of state groups from South Carolina and Florida targeting freight, as well as an increase in theft on the edges of the Atlanta Metro Area like Henry County and Coweta County.

In partnership with the Georgia Motor Trucking Association, Georgia Cargo Theft Intelligence Group and companies engaged in business within the State of Georgia, we respectfully ask you to join the effort in requesting the State of Georgia allocate dedicated budget funding for the Georgia Bureau of Investigations Major Theft Unit.

In an effort to maximize our impact, a collective list of companies who conduct business within the State of Georgia who will benefit from the funding of a new GBI MTU will accompany the request to Georgia’s Governor, Brian Kemp. Thank you for coming together as an industry and we look forward to receiving your support.
