What is it: The Climate Solutions Caucus is a bipartisan group in the US House of Representatives which will explore policy options that address the impacts, causes, and challenges of our changing climate. The caucus was founded in February of 2016 by two south-Florida representatives Rep. Carlos Curbelo (R-FL) and Rep. Ted Deutch (D-FL), who serve as co-chairs of the caucus.
“The Caucus will serve as an organization to educate members on economically-viable options to reduce climate risk and protect our nation’s economy, security, infrastructure, agriculture, water supply and public safety,” according to documents filed with the Committee on House Administration.
Membership will be kept even between Democrats and Republicans.
What we want: We want Brian Higgins to join his Republican colleagues on the Climate Solitions Caucus and solidifying his support to address climate change.
History: New York has a history of supporting climate change and supporting the charge of Citizens Climate Lobby. Rep. Chris Gibson of New York, and ten of his republican colleagues presented a resolution recognizing and calling for action on climate change. After that, Citizens Climate Lobby was able to reach out to Republicans, making climate change a non-partisan issue.
Over the years, many republicans and democrats have joined the caucus and it has grown to 62 members of Congress. Most recently, Rep. Tom Reed and Rep. Chris Collins joined the caucus in an effort to work on this pressing issue.
With his proximity, Brian Higgins would be positioned to work with Reps. Reed and Collins closely to ensure that New Yorkers are adequately represented on this important issue.
