Paul J Ruben started this petition to Brevard County Parks and Recreation and

Wickham Park requires a proper land management plan to ensure the continued survival of the remaining Florida Scrub Jays, a federally threatened species. A plan should contain reoccurring prescribed burns and invasive species management in areas that are currently and potentially critical habitat.

Wickham Park is located on the Atlantic Ridge and historically included a vast amount of upland scrub habitat. Scrub habitat is “pyrogenic” and requires fire to maintain a stable environment for native species. Prescribed burns are a common practice to mimic these natural disturbances. Low intensity prescribed burns will prevent the future spread of high intensity wildfires which could cause damage to facilities and nearby homes.

Scrub habitat on the Atlantic Ridge has been reduced significantly over the last century and Wickham Park is one of the few isolated areas where Florida Scrub Jays still exist in Melbourne, Florida. Due to their proximity to urban and populated areas, they have the potential to educate future generations about the wildlife of Florida. This petition also includes creation of educational signage for Florida Scrub Jays to be posted around their habitat or trail heads.
