Open Brentwood Elementary Schools
Open Brentwood Elementary Schools
On 7/29, the Brentwood School Board and Superintendent announced plans for K-12 to be 100% virtual through at least October 26th, citing increased St. Louis County case counts of Covid-19. Medical evidence suggests that young kids are far less likely to contract, become seriously ill/hospitalized or asymptomatically transmit the virus (see below presentation).
By signing this petition, you are asking that the school board and superintendent reconsider opening the Elementary Schools as planned in late August (those that want to keep kids home should be allowed that option).
Throughout the summer, our administrators consistently stated how we are uniquely positioned to return safely due to our small class sizes and neighborhood schools that don't require buses. We feel the sudden reversal creates more problems for children and parents than the minimal risk associated. Zoom education is unlikely to be successful for young kids and parents should have an in person option.
In a recent talk, 'Helping Parents Navigate Back-to-School', Dr. Rachel Orschlen and Dr. Jason Newland, both pediatric infectious disease physicians of Washington University, presented a strong case for a safe return to school for kids and teachers. We urge the board and Dr. Lane to open McGrath and Mark Twain.
